Questions

Will it look worse?
Slightly, and the preview shows you exactly how much before you commit. Photographs tolerate heavy compression well; screenshots and images with text degrade visibly much sooner.
What makes the biggest difference?
Dimensions, not quality. An 8000px photo displayed at 1200px carries six times the pixels anyone will see — resizing saves far more than re-encoding.
