How to scan a document with your phone, without an app

A phone photo of a document and a scan of a document are different things, and everyone who has had an upload rejected knows which one they sent. The difference is mostly lighting and angle, and neither needs an app.

Getting a clean capture

1. Put the page on a dark, plain surface. Dark makes the edges obvious; a patterned tablecloth makes them impossible.
2. Light it from the side, not from above your shoulder — overhead light puts your own shadow on the page.
3. Hold the phone parallel to the page, directly over the middle. Photographing at an angle gives you a trapezoid no cropping fully fixes.
4. Fill the frame with the page, and tap to focus before shooting.

Then bring the size down

Phone cameras produce far more resolution than a document needs. A four-page scan straight from a modern phone can be 15 MB; the same pages at document resolution are under 1 MB and look the same on screen.

Questions

Is a phone scan good enough for official use?

For most submissions, yes — provided the whole page is visible, square to the camera, in focus, and evenly lit. Some authorities require a certified copy, which is about who attests it, not how it was captured.

Why do my scans look grey and dull?

The camera is exposing for the whole scene, including the dark surface. Tap on the paper to meter for it, or raise the exposure slightly.

Can I scan a book page this way?

Yes, though the curve near the spine will distort the text and OCR reads it less reliably. Press the page flat and photograph one page at a time.
